According to the United Nations, more than 100 civilians have been killed so far in Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. In addition, more than 300 bystanders have been injured, the office of U.N. human rights envoy Michelle Bachelet said in Geneva on Monday. At least seven children were also among the fatalities, it said. Ukraine, meanwhile, accused the neighboring country of war crimes at a special session of the U.N. Security Council.
“Most of these casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a large impact area, including shelling by heavy artillery, rocket launchers, and airstrikes,” it said. According to Ukrainian sources, more than 350 civilians have already been killed due to the fighting.
Russia rejects accusations that it is attacking civilian facilities. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres had called attacks on bystanders “totally unacceptable.” In the U.N. Security Council, Ukraine’s U.N. Ambassador Serhiy Kyslytsya accused the neighboring state of using an aerial bomb on Monday. The use of this weapon, colloquially known as a “vacuum bomb,” has been banned near civilian infrastructure or civilians since 1980.
“Russia keeps attacking kindergartens and orphanages. Russia attacks hospitals. Russia attacks mobile medical aid brigades with shelling and sabotage groups,” Kyslytsya said Monday in New York. He said these are not the acts of a state with security concerns. “These are the acts of a state determined to kill civilians. There is no debate: these are war crimes.”
